The Chinese Gold Panda series began in 1982 with 1/10 ounce, 1/4 ounce, 1/2 ounce, and 1 ounce medals and over the years it has grown to include numerous other sizes. Each year features a different Panda design, and in some years medals were struck for coin shows or to commemorate various anniversaries. In recent years Panda coin collecting has seen a surge in popularity both in the United States and in China.

NGC recognizes a number of major varieties of gold Pandas. For Pandas dated 1989 to 1999 we will automatically attribute Large and Small date varieties, including the more nuanced Large Date Serif 1 and Large Date Plain 1 for 1999 Pandas. The 2000 Pandas are attributed with Frosted Ring or Mirrored Ring.
